Darrell,
The recommendation for 10W40 and 10W30 is found both on page 86, for the
gasoline engine, and on page 98, for the diesel engine in our 1982
Volkswagen Owners Manual for Vanagon.
The conditions specified for the use of 10W40 / 10W30 are for consistent
temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit for both motors. However, at
consistent temperatures of five degrees below zero, the gasoline motor
requires 5W20, while the less-finicky Diesel can hang with the 10W40
apparently until hell freezes over. (My Turbo Diesel Jetta also recommends
10W40 for cold temperature...don't make me get the manual...:)
In this Vanagon manual, 5W30 is not recommended under any conditions, for
either motor.

Hi Bulley,
Ok GM which vanagon owners manual do you have that is suggesting 10w40
as acceptable oil for a vanagon? It is not in any of my water cooled
operators manuals. The bentley bible oil chart on c17, v8 doesn't list it
either. Few if any car manufactures recommend 10w40 as acceptable motor
oil
for the last 10 -15 years. I agree with your 20-50 but switch to 10w30 or
5w30 in winter.
Darrell
