NT should never need to rebooted to prevent crashes.
Our server for the Defense Information Network is required to be 24X7, and
IS 24X7.
If the server needs to be regularily rebooted, there is likely a memory leak
in one of the applications that is running on it. In other words, one of the
programs has a bug.
What can happen in this situation is that the app doesn't release memory
when it is finished with it, and eventually there is not enough in the
working set and swap space to maintain the NT kernel, and it crashes.
There are at least 3 things to do to investigate this:
1. Look at the system event log and see what events are there relating to
failures and warnings;
2. Use Performance monitor to track the memory utilization
3. Use Performance monitor to track the number of processes (if this
steadily increases there is an application problem) (this can be a cause of
the memory leak, as well as a symptom of one)
