I haven't had to use local mechanics much as I do most work myself, but the
few times I have, I've been happy with Dana Automotive. I had them replace
an engine for me due to the dreaded coolant corrosion/leak problem. They
took the time to show me the disassembled engine, what they found and why
they recommended replacing the engine vs. just the heads. They do charge
"dealer rates" thus I only use them as necessary. At times they have given
me discounts on parts, usually the big ticket items. For example, 15% off
the $700 rear bumpers I needed a couple years ago. The rest of the time, I
rely on the parts guys here on the list.
On the other hand, Rick Star Volkswagen in Wilbraham (now Wilbraham Toyota
Volkswagen), does not generate any warm fuzzy feelings. Had them do some
major engine work under warranty years ago, I then spent the following
Saturday tightening bolts and adjusting belts to finish the job. With the
condition I received the van in, I didn't want to risk taking it back to
them. Even with the new name/owners, I am still leary of them, their prices
are high and they are unwilling to extend any discounts on parts. Also,
Volkswagen being second in the company name seems to be reflected in their
attitude as well, their emphasis seems to be on Toyota, in the showroom, on
the lot and in the repair bays.
If you'd like to compare notes, comiserate <g> or need advice, let me know
I'm only a few minutes away in Granby.
