Good news!  You can get a stock Bosch O2 sensor at German Parts &
Restoration (1-800-321-5432) for $118 + shipping.   Just talk to Greg at
ext. 504.  The O2 sensor I've bought from them has Bosch no. 0 258 003 931
but the sensor from VW dealer has Bosch no. 0 258 003 031.

Dear Nathaniel,

This is precisely the same thing that happened to me just two weeks ago --
I properly installed a "generic" O2 sensor and the engine wouldn't run at
all once it warmed up. Disconnected ran fine. Bought a "stock" O2 sensor,
plugged it in and all was well again.

So moral of the story? Either the generic O2 sensor I was sold was bad
(which I suspect) or the splice that I made was bad (unlkely, as I've done
WAY too many automotive splices in my day).

Here's to $130 O2 sensors!
