Subject: Swap update
Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII
Well got started on my swap yesterday. Didn't get much more accomplished than
powerwashing the two trannys (water boxer and diesel) and getting them all
taken apart to notice I had a bad main shaft sleeve in the diesel bell housing
and had to replace it with the one from the waterboxer trans. No problem
except I would need to also replace the main shaft oil seal. Had to go to the
parts store and got back home in time to cover everything up with tarps and
put away tools.
Today, woke up and it was raining. My Dad suggests moving the stuff into his
building and trying to work.
Replaced oil seal and with a little RTV the new Diesel/boxer transmission is
together in no time flat. Anyone need a good diesel trans except for the
bellhousing or good boxer bellhousing? (all of you diesel people who have
been clamouring to change to the waterboxer nows your chance!)
Removed Rabbit trans from motor.
Removed new looking clutch assembly and flywheel.
Removed intake and exhaust manifolds.
Removed timing covers so I can remove the Rabbit type motor mount.
Removed motor mount.
Removed motor mounts from diesel (took pictures)
Removed oil pan from JH motor (looks clean in there)
Removed oil pan from diesel (looks nasty in there)
Removed oil pickup tube from JH
Removed oil pickup tube from diesel and put it on JH.
Installed diesel oil pan on JH motor.
That is basically where I am now. It looks to me that I can keep the bracket
that came with the JH motor that holds the alternator, A/C compressor and
power steering pump. Is that true?
Also need advice if I should just use the diesel exhaust manifold or should I
go with one from a Fox or Dasher (how much of a difference does it make?)
I will keep the list posted. I still plan to make a manual about the
conversion so I am taking pictures all along the way.
Thanks for the interest.
