The Mexican busses use the golf motors standing up. I had literature on
these a few years ago. As for gear ratios, they are not much different from
air to water cooled. There is not even enough difference to even worry
about it. There is a difference for the diesel. The Waterboxer pushes the
Vanagon faster because it can spin faster. The air cooled engines run out
of "breath" at about 4500 rpm, the water boxer will pull to 5400 rpm which
is when the governor kicks in. As for engine transplants, any 4 cylinder
engine should probably keep the original gearing, a six cylinder could use
taller gears but you'll find little difference in fuel economy to justify
the cost.
