A final update on the Shim install project.
This is not for the faint of heart.
Project is complete. Van has the two .5 inch shims in place.
The second side went much easier then the first, also called, the learning side.
I stayed hands off this project.
New Van care taker helped me with the project. The second side only took a few hours and went along nicely. We took off less items so were able to move more quickly and efficiently. We also trusted the heavy duty spring compressor more and really compress that spring. This allowed for a better removal and more importantly an easier install. The shim and isolator stayed nice and straight this time.
I’m pretty sure in the end we didn’t need to take off the lower ball joint.
So all is back together and I just need to find a good alignment shop. Actually from what we learned this could likely be done without changing the alignment but I needed an alignment anyway to try to address some tire wear issues.
Strange thing is after being in the air for so long the front sat very high. Much higher then when we first put it up.
I measured before the job and the distance from metal arch to middle of front hub was 17 inches. After setting on the ground with one shim. Both sides read about 18 inches give or take a bit. Then after the second shim we went from 17 to about 18.5 passenger side and 19 on driver side.
After driving the van in the driveway to turn it around it sank to about 18 and 18.5.
I look forward to getting it out for a drive to see where it settles down to, but that will wait for spring and salt free road conditions.
