I went on this quest in 2018 when restoring my 84. The GoWesty stainless system was available, but I had read it was louder than stock. All my reading pointed to the stock system being the quietest option. That’s what I valued most. I bought all new pipes, cat, and muffler from Vanagain. Properly sealed, it was very quiet.

When I got my 85, I moved all the new exhaust components to it. I was once again astounded at how quiet it was. I was careful to chase down all leaks using a shop vac running in reverse on the tailpipe and some soapy water. I think that makes a big difference.
