Zoltan, very glad it all worked out.
But on a similar vein...suppose I wanted to REPLACE that 31 year old flasher switch with a new one? I've been looking and looking on internet and not having much luck. Mine says "VW90" on the left side, and then the white triangle over red lens on the right side. Maybe something from a similar era Jetta would work?
Since operation of turn signals and emergency flashers are so interrelated and largely depend upon nice internal contacts in switches, what is one to do to preemptively fix this one? My last option is a heavy dose of what I prescribed to you: spray contact cleaner as best as possible INSIDE flasher switch, actuate 50 times or more, and hope for the best. I am not having any issues right now but I'm always looking 25 years ahead.
In Southern California with crazy freeway speeds, blinkers are essential to preserving life! I'm even working on a little side project to add yellow blinker indicators either to outside mirrors or maybe at line of sight at front door....something simple, small high output LED...but highly visible. Like the modern cars often have....I really like it when I see their outboard mirrors blinking.

Yes Rich, it was the emergency flasher. When I was reading your message, I
thought, it can't be, the flasher went on when I was connecting the battery.
But I went out and checked and yes, the flasher did not operate well. I
moved it a few times and now all works fine. Thank you very much. I owe

Since you removed dash, you also removed the instrument cluster; and to do
that, you had to disconnect the emergency flasher switch. I know that the
emergency flasher and the turn signal switch are all part of one system.
I've had intermittent turn signal problems that were solved by cleaning of
emergency flasher switch contacts (spray contact cleaner into switch then
rapidly operated like 50 times). Maybe it's even something as simple as the
connector on back of flasher switch not solidly attached. Worth a try
anyway.
