Hi Eric;From what I have seen and been told, the antenna goes out the hole in the body, not through the hole behind the headlamp.  Mine will not go out either hole.  I know the hole behind the headlight, which is missing the rubber grommet (anyone know if that's available?), is supposed to be there to accept the antenna tube for when it's collapsed.Are you saying your antenna came out through the hole behind the headlight?

Hi David,

I have a 85.  I think I took off my front grill and maybe the head light and dropped the antenna down and out.  I used the tip to cut the cord and I attached the new antenna cord to the old one then from inside the bus I pulled it through to the back of the radio.  I then popped the new antenna up and attached.  I’m pretty sure this is how I did it on my 85.  There were directions on one of the vender sites It was either Vanagain or Van cafe.  It was a long time ago now about 2013. 
 
Actually, it may have been a list member that talked me through it with a detailed email. 
So it may be it is supposed to go in from below.
