Very sorry to see this, good luck with your insurance settlement! Propane tanks don't explode in fires as long as they are in good condition. The pressure relief valve on the tank shutoff will vent the propane as it heats up, which, of course, ignites and becomes a massive fireball. This can happen several times until the tank is empty. Given the intensity of that fire, I doubt there is any propane left in either of your tanks.
You can see this happening here at 1:50 (don't watch if you don't want to be further saddened by the loss of Vanagon, and do make sure your fuel lines are new and the clamps are tight): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Q_nveKHC0

There should have been propane in the tank, as I had it filled after the last trip of the fall. I have not checked to see if the tank is still there, is in one piece or has gas in it. It is still smoldering around the van and in it, so until all that dies down, I am not checking.
However, we had a 20lb grill type propane tank in the shed and amazingly that was still in one piece even though the fire was hot enough to melt aluminum - the aluminum allow wheels from a Toyota parked right next to the van were just plain gone. The various windows in the Toyota were melted.

So sorry! must have been a sickening feeling to see it destroyed.
It is impressive how much was consumed by the fire. "I was like where's the interior?" It's all gone. I did notice the stainless steel exhaust and intake pipes for the fridge were still there hanging in space.
wondering if you had propane in the tank?
