I have just placed the following For Sale add in TheSamba.com along with photos:
Our ’85 Westfalia is completely equipped with the tilt top, refrigerator, stove, sink, etc. It was delivered new in Pasadena, CA, with automatic transmission and integrated in-dash air conditioning (German Behr model). It has remained in this area and is completely rust free.
I carefully completed a Tiico 2.0 engine conversion in 2003 when the car had gone 87,000 miles because a couple of head bolts had snapped on the original water boxer engine, and I preferred to go with the in-line replacement kit. I also installed an A2 fuel rail and a 3-wire Ox sensor. There have been absolutely no vibration problems and the car runs very smoothly with more power than the original.
The car is in top condition with no wear on the upholstery and perfect pearl white paint (see attached photos). It now has only 103,500 total miles on it and we have decided to sell it because we no longer use it much. We have outlived the friends we used to travel and camp with, and our children and grandchildren are far away.
Price: $12,500 firm. This includes a complete set or remote outside mirrors, wire harness and switch from a later model Vanagon, which I never got around to installing.
Important note: I believe the problems some people have had with Tiico engine conversions has been because the installation and maintenance information provided for the conversion never mentioned that the Tiico engines are high performance engines with a high compression ratio (10:1), which should be run on premium (91 octane) gasoline. We also own a 4 cylinder 2003 Passat with a compression ratio of 9.5, for which VW specifies 91 octane fuel, as they do for most of their cars. The 91 octane fuel reduces the combustion temperature in the cylinder head, which reduces wear and also reduces the level of nitrous oxide (NO) exhaust emission. This allows the Tiico engine to pass the very strict emissions test for California registration when set for the recommended 8-deg spark advance at 1450 RPM.
