Road de-icing brine solutions are regularly used as far south as the
Carolinas. That stuff destroyed the bottom of my motorhome. I have seen a
number of VW including Vanagon transmissions corroded to the point that the
top of the main housing has collapsed leaving a large hole. From the factory
the later engines and transmissions had some type of waxy coating on them.
Most paints need to be maintained on these things.

In Alabama where it lives rust and corrosion are two things we don't worry
about unless parked for decades.
