I've had this symptom intermittently in my '86 with AT for most of the 15
years I've owned it. It happens most frequently after a period of not
using the van, at air temps over 70 degrees, with cold engine. I've found
that moving the gas pedal up and down a few times rapidly will often get a
response and get the rpms up then it will run normally. Holding the pedal
steady seems to make it worse.
Sometimes I also get a stuttering at idle a couple minutes after starting
the engine with the same conditions as above. Maybe it's the same root
cause just in different conditions. idling vs attempting to accelerate
from idle. If the engine stalls during this symptom, it is hard to restart
and then likes the gas pedal held down as if it's flooded or trying to
start with too rich condition. Perhaps this is occurring during the ECU's
transition to closed loop operation?
