Dave,
The snow pack on the island was extraordinarily low this weekend, it might have even been a record. Ski hills only opened for a couple of weeks.
That means trouble for some folk who rely on surface water. And I wonder about salmon streams being very low and if the forecasts are correct, the fall will be drier than normal meaning delayed spawning runs.
I know that sockeye are being caught in the Alberti inlet right now, which is a few weeks ahead of schedule. Maybe that's due to the warm patch of water off the coast, another unusual occurrence.
I read cliff mass' blog, the U W meteorologist, he does a good job of making all the is understandable. He had a post on the unusual rain fall in eastern Washington a few weeks ago, lots of rain there and not much on the coast.
If this keeps up the forests will be dry ahead of schedule. Apart from the obvious concern about fire, it means some of our trips might be changed due to locked gates on the logging roads.
You know, when you say you live in the GNW I have to admit to a prejudice. Both in Washington and BC, once to go east over the coast range you have to turn in your mossy badge :-)

The search for property has been more difficult than I expected it to be. Driest May ever here, too. In fact, dry the whole year so far, almost no snow this winter. Typically when I have visited in May, a glance to the N or E would reveal snow covered mountains. The mountain snow was essentially gone in March this year. mcneely
