It WILL lift straight up. It has to, or it isn't coming off : )
Try this: tape a sheet of heavy paper or cardboard to the side of your van
just below the cover. Make it as long as the cover.
Take a piece of 2 x 4, wrapped in an old shirt or sheet, as long as the
panel and place it over the paper, below the paper. Use a rubber or plastic
hammer to strike the 2 x 4 sharply from the bottom up and down its length.
The paper/cardboard is there to keep from marring your side panel.
Don't hit it hard enough to deform the lower edge of the cover, but keep
tapping along the length and it will come off.
