A Syncro can always need a tranny. In fact any of the manual trannies can
break stuff with no regard for mileage or time. As for engines, if it has
less than 150k then you have to also assume overall lack of care/knowledge
or some level of abuse.
As for the quality of rebuilds there is of course all levels. However from
experience true defects/poor quality usually happen almost immediately after
install. Except for things like soft valve stems and some other stuff most
failures after 3,000 miles are not a rebuilders fault.

Good points Neil. Every Vanagon I buy I always assume it to need a motor and
if a syncro a tranny. Unless they can produce verifiable documents from a
know builder. If its a GEX,AVP,etc..it's junk to me. I actually prefer one
that's not running so I can yank the stock power plant out and put in a
conversion. Like a zetec...for example!
