I would think you'd be able to use a strong, thin rod, run through the
pocket of a tarp, clamped fore and aft of the stainless trim using the Bus
Depot clamps. My wife and I made our own awning this way, but with a
larger, sectioned, tent pole that we clamp to the rain gutter. The Bus
Depot clamps work great for us! We tried a number of different attachment
options and the BD clamps are the only one that hasn't EVER come loose in
numerous big storms.
