In dash gauges are not high precision devices. I have found that the for the
VDO gauges the senders for the aftermarket gauges often do not match what is
used for OEM gauges. Get the correct sender that would be sold with/for the
gauge you are using.
Next is choosing a suitable location for the sensor. For the inline engines
VW usually choose the oil filter mount, direct center which is the return to
the engine. If there is a cooler this can be a little misleading as it is
the cooled (or heated) oil going back. I prefer to drill the filter mount
and install the sensor where the oil comes out. Another option is to install
the sensor in the pan. VDO does even market sensor that replace the drain
plug, (I don't like that due to impact possibility and the wire at oil
change time).
Gauge accuracy really isn't critical. Whether the oil is 210 or 220 is not
an issue. The problem is when it continues to climb to the point that oil
pressure starts to drop. What you want to know is where things are normally
and then to know when something is different.

sender + gauge?
I'm back to my quest to get accurate oil temp readings. After reading
numerous threads on VW forums I see that it is common that temp reading on
cockpit instruments are not that accurate (meaning +-10 to 20F error). Some
have resorted to trying different sensors until one a match between sensor
and gauge is found.
The sensor I tried was this one, that nominally is a 0-150C sensor, but I
understand matches with the 300F VDO vision gauge. However I didn't get
accurate readings as mentioned below:
https://www.busdepot.com/oil-temperature-sender
Part Reference Number: 049919563A
Brand: FAE
I was wondering if the newer style sender also has an M10x1 thread, and thus
would fit my AAZ and other older Diesel blocks. This is the one:
https://www.busdepot.com/1h0919563
Part Reference Number: 1H0919563
Brand: FAE (Italy)
Also, maybe a long shot, what is the thread of a type 1 drain plug hole? If
M10x1 could I try this sensor?

Thanks,
Martin

Interesting information. I'm pretty sure my sender is a VDO brand. I wonder
how the accuracy compares to the FAE?
