Don't get too hung up on tolerances of the gauge readings. There are many
parts with tolerances such as the gauge itself, the thermostat, the gauge
voltage regulator and even the wiring can all contribute to differences in
the gauge reading. As for the difference in the cooling fan cycling there
are a number of factors there also. I would start by replacing the fan
switch first. Keep in mind that there are a number of different
versions-temp setting available for these switches. You may have two
different ones there.

I have two 88 GL's with the 2.1L engines. The cooling fan on my blue van
cycles on and off far more frequently than my red van. The blue van seems to
run just a tiny bit hotter than the red van. I've noticed that the temp
gauge in the Blue van rides over but on the upper side of the light, while
in the red van it rides over the light but on the lower side. If I put the
two needles together side by side - they would cover the warning light. That
is pretty close - yet Ol' Red's fan does not come on until the needle goes
up a good bit, yet Ol' Blue comes on right at the top of the light. Anyone
have any ideas what this is about?
Thanks,
John Rodgers

I too have these plugs for many years. They are a favorite. The are a much
better choice that the W7DTCas those are really too long.

There's also Bosch Platinum +4 (quad tip) 4477. Installed today, seems to
have smoothed the idle and acceleration over the well used Bosch single tip
plugs they replaced. Smooth running.

Neil,
Doesn't seem to matter which type or brand I screw-in either my Van or my
person.
Van still doesn't run and my pattern baldness is still blamed on my long
deceased mother!
YMMV

I have one of the fan switches that kicks the fan on lower
than the stock switch is factory spec'd for. It was what I
had on the shelf at the time when installing a new radiator.
When I do a coolant flush this fall I plan to swap it for a stock
switch. I don't like the fact it kicks the fan much more
than an oem spec switch. I really believe if your system is
working properly it is not needed and only a band aid if it's
not.

Sounds like it's too close to the thermostat temp. When the T-stat
opens, and lets more hot coolant through the system, the fan kicks in,
and the combination cools quickly. Lather, rinse, repeat. Doesn't really
hurt, but unnecessary wear and noise.
Fan T-stats need to be enough above the coolant T-stat to let it do it's
job. They shouldn't kick in until the coolant T-stat is fully open,
except A/C ones, which are to cool the condenser, not the radiator. But,
those are usually run continuously when A/C is on, so they don't cause a
feedback loop.

Weird day today, I am working in Virginia Beach (I live in N. Virginia =

NOTHING for him, I took him and his wife out to dinner on my own). =
