Just some random thoughts since I'm also researching engine options:
1. When you move away from stock, plan on being your own mechanic to as
large a degree as you are able.
2. If you do the install yourself, you will be an educated mechanic!
3. If you cannot do the installation or be your own mechanic, base your
engine choice (Subaru or Bostig) on finding a local installer, since you
will most likely need several fine tuning follow up visits, as well as
routine service.
4. If your van has an AT, it will require even more fine tuning for the
Bostig, and you will likely need to work directly with Bostig if you don't
have a local installer.
There was a long discussion recently on the meaning of "turnkey" when it
comes to engine conversions. That term only applies when you have an expert
installer who will warranty his work.
The shop in Seattle is excellent, but I'm sure you can find someone closer
on the east coast. If you do send it up here, I'll help you out with test
driving, etc., since I live about a mile from them!

I've decided to have someone install a Bostig in my 85 Vanagon. If I
understood Jim Akiba at the MA shop, they no longer install the engine.
A firm in Seattle does. I can't do it myself.
I live in northern Alabama. I will transport the bus to and from an
installer, so Seattle is a bit far away.
I feel uneasy finding a 3rd party to install the engine because if something
goes wrong, I'm afraid folks will be pointing figures at each other. So I'd
like to find an entity who will assume total responsibility installing the
engine, and if necessary, coordinate with the Boston shop if problems arise.
Would I be asking too much?
My other option is to get my mechanic in Huntsville AL to install it.
How difficult is it to install this engine?
