Shuffling might actually be a better description. What happens is that the
case halves can loosen and they pound out where the center webs for the
bearing meet. During a rebuild the when the case halves get torqued together
The deck between the cylinders gets pulled in. Now the cylinders are not
parallel with each other and the tops are not at the same height. So on goes
the head and a short time later the top gasket burns out. Sometimes they
make this neat chirping noise as it becomes a vibrating reed before part of
it disappears. So the head gets pulled and the gasket changed etc. and it
happens again. This is often accompanied with unexplained oil leakage near
the cylinders.
The air cooled engines do not freeze up or boil over. They just get soft and
change their shape when they over heat.

'possible case twisting' ..............! ! !
that's why I never touch the things.
can anyone spell " u n d e r b u i l t." ?
lol.
"I'm sorry sir ..
your cases are twisted ....and your engine isn't even good for a core to
rebuild."
this is the kind of thing I *don't want to know* about in VW's ..and why I
simply do not touch air-cooled vw's.
