Ken,
Dennis' post suggested I should pass on my experience in the past 2 years.
The test would not pass HC at idle, everything else passed. No amount of
fiddling try-this try-that would get it passed. Compression test / leakdown
showed a weak exhaust valve. So, I spent a few hundred $ trying this,
trying that and then had to replace the head anyway in the end. So please
do the compression test, and then leakdown before you spend too much $
trying other things.
When the engine is turning faster at higher RPM, and compression cycles are
much shorter, means there is less time for the gas (HC) to leak out of the
leaky exhaust valve. That is why they pass at high RPM but not at idle.
(DRK, BTIWS). There may be some other problem in your engine, but this was
my experience.
