Martin -
That Bus Boys blurb was written by me for them in the late 90s and
while Bentley doesn't address the fitment issue, the Bosch catalog
does. The difference is in the brush length and the size of the Slip
Ring the brushes contact.
The best way to determine what regulator is correct for you 65amp
alternator is having the original VW and/or Bosch number from the
alternator, usually on a foil sticker attached to it. But, over time
these can disappear. Another Bosch sticker (if its a remanufactured
unit) would be the AL number. Once we know what alternator it is, a
proper voltage regulator can be found out.
The 1.9TD was never installed on North American Vanagons in the early
80s that I know of, so I dunno if the alternator from the original 1.6
is the same or swappable to the 1.9 diesel.
The button-style regulator is usually installed on alternators with
28mm slip rings. I cannot remember what the size of the slip ring is
for the the rectangle style regulator, but I know it's not 28mm.
