One age/wear hazard that can make the 2nd gear shift soft or irregular is if
there's a failure in the 2nd gear piston mentioned by Ken under the circlips
on the DS.
If the rubber piston seals are cracked, aged to shrink or in my Brother's
case the small internal retaining E-clip fell off and wedged into the
pistons sidewall and inhibited the stroke.
Service to the 2nd gear piston & seals can be done with trans in place,
though you will likely need to drop the pan & valve body if you pull it to
get the 2nd gear band in position on the "fingers"
On Mom's AT vanagon the 2n'd gear cover popped off while she was driving it.
Creating a huge cloud of smoke as the ATF poured out onto the hot exhaust.
The Circlip had grit, and oxidation under it which undermined it's groove
and ability to retain the huge pressures.
I used a cheap Bar clamp with one head reversed to push (screw adjustment)
the piston in to allow reseating the retaining Circlip. (after cleaning the
groove of detris)

I'm not sure that I'm going to be messing with that screw.
I expect that it should have more than enough stroke to compensate for wear
all right. .
