I remember doing this before with a kit from one of our vendors and never
did get the right technique to release the roll pin-I was probably spreading
it more, but that nylon/plastic piece was still in good shape. My gripe
was finding a decent rubber boot that would last more than 6 mos. to contain
the grease/keep out the grime on that end. Did I see that Ken at Vanagain
might have the OEM boot available soon(Ah, parts from the VW Deutschland!)?
Otherwise going to have to go with the bike inner tube and zip ties
(vanagon list cringes in unison as do I). My shifter has gotten loose and sloppy
again and I need to figure out what is worn and where. Everything is kept
really well lubed and maintained but just not crisp and precise like my
buddies 87 with 90,000 miles on the odom.(a moment of Deja Vu/Oh yeah while
going through the gears). Need to do the whole project from shifter to tranny
right. Getting that shifter feeling right would be a good winter doldrums
project. Might feel as good as losing 10 lbs. in January after holiday
goody bingeing.

Might try to remove the roll pin and reverse the "cup, lever, widget" on the
shift shaft.
Have tightened up a few this way successfully. They are dealer NLA. Try our
usual vendors too.
Or maybe tig the hole closed and re drill as one of my customers is doing.

I need a vanagon shifter part, called the selector lever, part # 251711973.
Anybody have one? Will take complete rear shift rod if needed.
Thank you,
Dennis
