The trick from what I learned from Jeff is the fact that it is a
diesel. California has very weird rules. They love diesel as it is
considered an alternative fuel. In my experience, CARB referees are
very friendly to people who convert vehicles to diesel. The problem is
when you want to bring in a vehicle which is already a diesel.
Many people are aware that there was a moratorium on diesel vehicle
sales when California was trying to force car manufacturers to put
pressure on fuel refiners to produce low sulphur diesel. The only way
to get newer diesels in during that period was by racking up 7500
miles on the car first. A small cottage industry sprang up to fill the
need. For example, it wasn't unusual to see a V10 diesel Toureg sell
for $15k+ over list in neighboring States. Anyway that is history now.
As far as importing diesel vehicles, the problem lies in testing. From
what Jeff (who is Registered Importer) tells me, there is testing lab
for diesels in California. Lack of demand, I suppose. So here's this
Singlecab with a diesel engine. Bad News Bears! You'd be better off
importing it without an engine and adding it on later. Or even
register in an import friendly State before bringing it to California
as a used vehicle. Though that might not be 100% Kosher, it's one way
to get the beef in your hotdog with minimal heat from the powers that
be. Unfortunately, the Sinka in question is already in the radar of
Cali DMV. That's more bad news.
One should investigate the legality of the above suggestions before
considering a purchase. I don't see this truck as a particularly great
deal. I sold my RHD Sinka for about half as much and it was a runner
of sorts.
