one way to tell roughly where the timing is ...
if it's trying to start that is ..
is turn it coutneclockwise ( advancing timing ) until it 'fights itself'
while cranking.
that's a sure sign of too advanced timing.
Rotate the distrubutor about 3/8 of an inch clockwise from there and you'll
be in the ball park.
as long as the timing is roughly in the ball park, timing not being spot on
won't keep it from starting.
Ton of leeway there, as far as just getting it fired up goes.
when you hear it fighting itself , cranking harder than normal, that's a
good sign ..
because then you know it's getting fuel and spark ...just retard the timing
some from there.
later of course, set it correctly with a timing light.
which you can use on a cranking engine too , doesn't have to be actually
running to use a timing light on it.
