Dennis is spot on as usual. I had this happen to me several years ago. I
was convinced that my AT was self-destructing. Admittedly, I have old ears,
but somehow I was convinced that the noise was coming from my tranny.
Turned out to be the water pump.
Now I have hearing aids.
