I am a VW mechanic by trade and have fought the beast for the past 10 years as a career, I don't miss it (doing it every day). I just finished school and received my Mechanical Engineering degree. The pay is better and I get the chance to sit at a desk, design and then go out in the feild and build. I also live in a neighborhood with that damn home owners association and working on vehicles is prohibited (thanks to my wife -she did not tell me that when we moved in), not even an oil change (I do it anyway). Be-live me it tears me up having to pay some one else to do the things I could do myself, but it is my daily driver and we were down to one car (time was short). they fixed me up and had me back on the road in 2 day. I want to thank one of my friends and past co-workers- Everett from Halsey in Portland OR. (YOU ROCK!!)

Danny boy, you have more money than me, so maybe the 10k subi van would suit
you best.
For those like me with more time than money, I would have crawled under the
beast and cursed and fought that leaky tranny and greasy axles.
For many the only way to own an old VW is to repair it yourself. A
rewarding, if not time consuming and occasionally frustrating proposition.

So I got my van back today. The damage? (cost) $976.00. Ya and my engine?
Its ok, it was not the rear main seal that went. It was the Automatic
transmishion torq converter seal. And all the other seals on the tranny.
(they were all starting to leak) They pulled the trany and replaced all the
tranny seals, even the seals between the gear box and ft part. I also had
them check all the cv joints. They found one bad one and repacked the
others. I also had them look at my rear brakes to make sure they were good
to go. WOW! this van has kicked my ass. I think I have spent over $7000.00
on odds and ends for this van over the past 2 months. I just saw a 1985
westy with a 2.2L subaru engine for $10,000.00, I might just buy it this
weekend. Like I said "WOW!!" Well Im going to the Camp 18 cruise in this
weekend (bring it on van) Now I have AAA...............
