Yes, there is definetly a white wire running from the ignition coil to the ECU. Well, at least there is on my 1982 Federal version air cooled van. I'm assuming the AC van we are discussing here has the California exaust and ignition?
Another component that interacts with the injectors is the extra resistor pack mounted on the chassis. I am not sure the California vans have this, but the Federal does. I believe the injectors on the water cooled vans are built with a different internal resistance so this "resistor pack" was eliminated. I might be getting the term wrong, but I am sure Ratwell explains it correctly. www.ratwell.com The Bentley does describe how to test this thing.

My Bentley manual shows that ECU pin #1 gets the signal from
the coil. This signal from one of the terminals on the coil
is actually connected to the pin #1 of the ignition control
unit. I think Scott was referring to the wire between the
terminal on the ignition coil and pin #1 of the ECU. If this
wire is disconnected you will still get sparks but the ECU will
not get the signal to fire the injectors. Scott probably has
this kept in his brain. I have to look at the schematics to
see this. That's a significant difference between an expert
and a novice. I think ECU is normally very durable. It is the
wiring that is more likely the cause of the problem.
