To answer your query as to why, its simply because I have one....and I like
the vans. I realise it would be far from ideal but the 109 HP and torque
would be nice in a Vanagon. The extra length would be a pain and the height
is a nuisance but as long as the main hatch door would close properly I
believe I could fabricate a closure that would be respectable, space out the
bumper and plate etc.

Better to get a 4 cyl VW diesel and use stock Vanagon diesel mounting
and cooling parts.
I have never heard of any way being used to install a 5 cyl other than
with the South African bell housing for a manual tranny. It is not an
adapter since it is a stock VW part used in a stock Vanagon model with
stock 5 cyls, with both a gas 2.5 and a gas 2.6 offered.
You could try KEP to see if they offer something.
