I've used dozens and dozens of water pumps with a black plastic impeller on
vw engines.
They're fine.
If there is any concern about the impeller touching the housing..........
The first thing you do after installing a w. pump is spin it by hand to make
sure it turns smoothly and doesn't rub on anything. I've used paper gaskets
on them many times.

Could be the wrong gasket. Good point. ...... I just checked. It is
about 1mm thick and looks to be a single layer. I couldn't tear it in
half. But if it isn't the right one, that might explain the damage.
I was warned by a lister on VW Vortex 2.0 list, that the pumps with
the plastic impellers tend to self destruct.
The pump + gasket in the pic are what I just pulled off a relatively
low mileage used Jetta 2.0 I picked up for my engine conversion. Glad
I did!
FWIW, the pump says "Germany, WWO" and has what looks like an Audi stamp.
I'm replacing the coolant pump, gaskets and belts while the engine is still
out.
