We just became a dealer for scan gauge, so if anyone wants one we can
hook you up with a good deal. I'm waiting on the first order now. We
are going to offer it as an option. The nice thing about it is the
X-gauge function, so we can program in our own custom gauges that are
OEM specific in addition to standard OBDII PIDs.
The other unit that we are becoming a dealer for actually also has on
device logging to flash memory, and has a GPS antenna input, so you
can actually play back logs along with google earth next to it. The
log playback software uses the google earth api to show where the car
was while it was logging as well.. so if you want to look at how well
your ride handled pulling teton, you could easily do so. This is the
first link in the chain that will lead to the next wave in engine
management, which is vehicle prognostics. This is one area where being
a micro manufacturer helps us, we could most certainly have a working
prognostics system for customers that actually logs info all the time,
and alerts us here if problems are spotted possibly even before the
customer notices anything. If the van is out of wireless or gsm range
it will hold data until it is again in range, and then transmit.. the
biggest problem with such a system isn't the technology to pull it
off, but the provacy issue associated with having that kind of
location information. However, a micro-manufacturer where our
customers are also very definitely friends of ours, the trust/privacy
thing isn't nearly as big of a deal because they can trust that we
aren't interested in snooping and are going to use the data for one
purpose alone. This system would also be very well suited for a
vanagon outfitter looking to rent fully equipped vans to folks. It's
very exciting.
