Being a full time vanagon tech, restorer, and engine conversion person, and
diagnostician,
I can't help focusing on what might be going on with the van.
I guess getting somewhere stable and safe first is the priority , then look
at the van.
I've had people call and be all worried about something awful with their
car, and they never even *looked* at the engine. The car arrives, I look at
the engine, and there's the biggest most obvious hose in the world off, or
an animal built a nest in there or something....
It always pays to do at least preliminary investigation. Sometimes it's
something even a smart 8 year old could notice.

Adam, I think you are closer to Albuquerque than
Dallas. Still, that doesnt help much.
One the other hand, the aircooled rescue list - while
not as nicely organized - no search by zip- has a lot
of people in Texas and southern New Mexico. However, I
think we need a volunteer with a better knowlege of
where these towns are should lookover the list for
towns in west Texas and southern New Mexico that are
closer to you.
Back when this list started, we were all one family,
aircooled and water. It should not make any
difference to a dedicated VW nut. Any volunteers that
can sort through these towns and see what makes sense?

Good luck
