If memory serves, the ECU "sees" the tach signal provided by the Hall Unit
via the Ignition Module (Bosch/Fairchild/Telefunken) on the left engine
wall. I do know that if the tach signal disappears, fuel pump (by way of
the ECU, Relay & for safety reasons) shuts off.
The real question here is why Mr. Squirrel is asking all of these questions
about the AAR, ECU, ISU, tach signals, Idle MicroSwitches, why the engine
doesn't shut off, mysterious vacuum leaks that just cannot be found under
any circumstance, etc....?
He reminds me of a friend of mine from a long time ago that before he would
use or operate anything he would buy, whether it be a vehicle, microwave,
stereo, tv, etc., he would literally "immerse" himself in the owner's
manual, the factory repair manual, schematics, troubleshooting charts, drive
the service departments crazy in questions regarding of the particular item
in question - any and everything to completely know why each and every
function worked or why it did not work, why it was suppose to work and why
it couldn't be made to do this and on and on and on, ad nauseum. He was
married four times too before giving up on that - too much over-analyzation
I guess ;-)
I'm not saying it's boring or driving any of us nuts, but it's interesting
after checking the Gmail for the past several months at looking at Mr
Squirrel's posts and coming to the conclusion that this is his way of
familiarizing himself with the never-ending saga of Vanagon/Westy
ownership. Or he's got more problems (or items of note) with his "ride"
than I would ever want with my Westy.
Keep asking questions Mike
