He probably just had an actual look at the numbers for what it would cost to produce and what he'd have to sell them for. Even a low modulus carbon fibre pop-top would far exceed the value of most of our buses. What would be the point, anyway? To save, what, 70 pounds or so?
When I go to bicycle races with a couple of team-mates and we have three high-end race bikes on the rack, the bikes exceed the value of my new H*nda Civic. And that's not even counting our spare wheel sets! Thank the gods for team sponsors, since I could never afford this stuff retail.
I'd rather take a fraction of the cost of a carbon fibre pop-top and put it into, say, a nice awning for my westy. Then I can do race warm-up on the trainer nice and dry-like, without having to bring (and set up) a stand-alone race tent.
