Most likely your engine has a hydraulic lifter that constantly leaked
out the oil over night. You said it takes 5 to 10 seconds for it to quiet
down. That says it is pumped back up again in 5 to 10 seconds. That
means it did not leak all its oil completely because it was only overnight.
What if you park the westy for a few more days? Does it sometimes take
much longer to quiet down? If yes, that means the lifter lost more oil
over a longer period of time. This is a proof that it is the lifter that
is making the noise.
The purpose of using hydraulic lifters in an engine, instead of solid ones,
is so that the engine will no longer need frequent valve adjustments. Hydraulic
lifters self-adjust. Unless someone did a poor job adjusting them you should
not need to adjust them over a very long period of time. My lifter adjustment
done 20k miles ago did not change anything after 20k miles later. I expect it
to remain the same for another 30k miles no doubt.
Check your oil level. Change your oil filter and oil. Keep your oil level
slightly higher than 1/2 between max and min mark on the oil stick. My engine
makes 1-2 seconds of slight valve noise upon starting up if I drive it everyday.
This is normal. 5-10 seconds is a bit too long.
Good luck.
