When changing wheels or tire size, I always go to this site first.
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
It allows you to put in the OEM size 185/80/14 and then compare the
alternative options...
Also, tells you the speed-o-meter change if you go taller or shorter.
Pretty cool!
I too have been given a set of Mercedes rims, 16x8, but the offset seems too
far - requiring a very large spacer. I'm probably going to try to sell
them, and go with the Wheels / Rims that Go-Westy offers! I was at Buses by
The Beach this past weekend, and the volks who have those wheels rave about
the stability. Why reinvent the wheel.

Auto, 4 speed or Syncro? What are your goals? In my opinion, Ultimate
performance with slight increase in diameter is 225/60-16, (26.5"). Standard
load index in this size is 97 which was the factory 205/14 fitment. There
are also extra load and reinforced tires available in this size. Matching
spare will not fit in the tire carrier. 215/65-16 is a little taller, (27")
and narrower. 98 load index. Can be made to fit in tire carrier with some
effort.
