Well, that explains why I have the recessed VW logo in the center of the
Rear Hatch on my 84 Westy.
When I first got the Westy in 1996 and was changing the engine to the
2.1upgrade I noticed on the rear valance (that's rear apron to you VW
old-timers), on the inside facing the engine area was a Dealer Inventory
sticker (the inside portion of the panel was factory primer grey,) which led
me to believe that the Westy may have been involved in a rear end collision
before I got it. A "tweaked" exhaust pipe here and there added to the
suspicions and most any other 84 or 85 I noticed my Rear Hatch didn't quiite
look the same. It has been apparently been replaced a newer lid due to the
suspected collision (a look at ETKA shows what pieces to use when replacing
with the latest VW PN).
What makes it more interesting is all three previous owners kept what
appears to be meticulous service records/receipts clear back to the day it
was picked up at the dealer in Redlands, CA. I was even able to contact the
original (and longest term) owner to discuss the vehicle (he gotta kick outa
seeing it a few years ago when I drove up to his house). He said the
suspected collision didn't happen "on his watch" (he had traded it in for a
"real" motorhome about 4 years before I got it). I believe him, because the
above referenced sticker looked brand new when I looked at it in '96, so I
imagine it was one of the other two owners.
