Subject: Clutch housing rebuild + other, notes (long)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1
Hi all.
First a correction to a previous post of mine.
It turns out that the Dside bushing parts for clutch
housing is plastic. Between parts guy and myself, we
had hoped VW might have upgraded the parts to brass. I
was wrong. The part does exsist, just not certain how
to get it up here in Canada.
As for stripped Pilot Bolt hole threads, I managed to
squeeze a 3/8 - 16 tap along side tranny case and tap
out the hole. Luckily the threads were "erased" enough
by the stock 11mm bolt, so no need to drill it out
though I was **very** careful, tapping less than a
full turn after some resistance was met. I made a
pilot bolt out of a mild steel 3/8 - 16 bolt. (did
this on drill press with files. Yes I know, not
correct use of drill press! :^)
All this is untested as yet, but I can't see a problem
with new pilot bolt.
Insatll of bushings was not difficult. Still waiting
on clutch lever from parts guy :^(
And oh yah. Made a wooden platform (to help with
tranny install), to fit my Can. Tire (Michelin) 3.5
ton floor jack. It turns out that a 7/8 socket will
fit into hole where stock metal cup fits. I bolted an
8" x 11" piece of 3/4 ply onto the 1/2" drive 7/8"
socket. (it's a spare) I may even add arms or rails to
side of plywood to keep tranny steady when refitting.
Jacking up this platform and standing on it was ok,
though I didn't stress side to side/fore aft too hard.
There is some play, but not too much (I hope!) This
isn't something a pro would use, but it should suffice
to help keep tranny from rolling around.
Getting tranny onto new platform should be intersting.
Should be able to lever it on withe something.
"Zorg! Me need stick/rock tool!"
I haven't R&R'd a tranny in some time, so keepin er on
track during install (especially so I don't dislodge
felt seal in flywheel) may be easier with platform.
Cheers,
Neil Nicholson.
