As others have already mentioned, the lighting pattern is what makes
the difference. With the original US DOT spec headlights, cars behind
me illuminate the road better than my own headlights do. This is just
plain dangerous in my opinion. With the European headlights, even
with the same wattage bulb, the road is illuminated wonderfully well
and I can see where I'm going. I also don't blind folks coming at me.
They are definitely not identical. There are several subtle
differences. The DOT lights have 3 dimples for the aiming gear, the
Eurospec ones don't. The bulb is difference, 9004 (I think) for the
US, H4 for the European. And the most important is the light
diffusion patten is quite different. If you are running stock, you
will have to try sitting in a vehicle with the European lights to see
how much of a difference it makes.
