When I did my stereo install on my 87 Westy, I cut new holes in the
bottom kick of the door to install 6" Polk woofers. I placed a dome
tweeter in the location of the power window switch, and abandoned the
stock speakers.
I tried to remove the stock speaker from it's plastic housing to
install the dome tweeter within the stock plastic grille, with no
luck. It's really glued to the magnet! I wrapped the crossovers in
bubble wrap, and cable tied them to the inside of the doors so they
wouldn't sit in water at the bottom.
While you have your door panels off, I highly recommend using some
form of sound deadening, be it liquid or bitumen sheet. It helped a
lot with my westy.
Good luck on your project!
