Naaa, let's keep it a German vehicle! Picture this along with a big wallet;
Install a VW Touareg V10 TDI Drive Train - of course with the motor mounted
in the back the van would go backwards. Simple solution to this. Install
pre IRS bus port-hole axles or the port-hole axels from a Steyr Pinzgauer.
This will get the wheels spinning in the correct direction, but with an
issue. The port-hole axles are also a gear reduction box, so, not a
problem, with the extra fender clearance and gear reduction you will be able
to install some 44" tall tires for the ultimate off-road machine! Like I
said, a deep pocket project, sort of like the Steyr-Puch Noriker - this was
a VW 3.5 LT that SDP put Pinzgauer running gear and prototyped it for the
Canadian Army for the LSVW project. Unfortunately we got the Iveco POS that
they are all swearing at....

Interesting idea though is if the engine spins the
opposite direction, it would allow the use of
something like an Audi Quattro powertrain in a Syncro.
I think an Audi V8 system with an auto trans and
locking diffs would be a neat idea in a Syncro with
say a Honda or Acura V6. You'd have to enjoy engine
swaps though as this would be a duesy. I also think
automatics are better off-road--at least for beginners
like me.
