Could be a leak in the oil cooler, due to corrosion, but not in my
situation.
I had this happen on my 2.1 which, due to it's 1.9 coolant pipes/hoses
configuration on my 84 Westy did not have an oil cooler. When my engine was
broken down for a valve job last spring, my mechanic found that the lower
piston liner o-rings were the incorrect ones installed (assembler had used
the liner to head o-rings on the bottom and the lower o-rings on the liner
to head,) and they had not sealed correctly, eventually after about 68K
blowing out and allow the oil and coolant to mix. Y'know, these are
purposely two different colors to prevent a foul-up like this to happen, but
I guess the best laid plans.......Result - complete engine rebuild :-(
Although not related, the auto trans cooler was toasted too (corroded), ATF
& coolant mixing as well, resulting in the auto section to be rebuilt at the
same time. At least the final drive checked out OK. Lotsa $$$$ spent on
this one :-(
Interestingly enough, it never externally leaked a drop of coolant or oil
the whole I had been driving it for the past several years. Too busy
"internally bleeding" for the last two years I guess.
