I lived for many years on the wrong coast. I was brought up outside of
Bawllimer MD. I have had my fair share of rusted, pitted, swiss cheesed
bodied cars. Most spectacular was a 74 Fiat X1/9. I found one little rust
spot in the pan. I took a screw driver and scraped it off. It went through
the pan so easy it was scarey. I patched that car with a large sheet of
galvanized steel and a ton of undercoating. East Coast cars define the words
"temporary transportation".
I keep offering my 81 to just about anyone who wants it. It's dirty, grungy,
trashed out interior, needs a motor rebuilt, needs a tranny (or take both
the 83 and the 81 and use the parts from one to make the other much better)
but solid. Nobody out here is interested. People only want me to part out
all the mid 80's camper stuff I have, and I won't do that. Soon, the 83 will
be hauled down to the pick and pull and I'll steal all the parts off the 81
to make my 84 into a WestyClone. Thanks to BenT I now have a propane setup
so I am good to go. That's how it is in California.
I guess my message to Dana is just start looking. There have been tons of
posts offering decent Vans in the last 6 months.
