You should wait for the glow plugs to go out before cranking! On my '89
Jetta I can hear the relay click. It is a few seconds after the glow plug
light goes out. I would be very surprised if the glow plugs operate when
the starter is engaged--practically everything is cut off by the ignition
switch when the starter is cranking. Your system may be different as they
went to a faster glow plug in the later 80s.
As far as the cold start handle, I have noticed it cranks much slower with
the handle pulled all the way out. I assume this is due to the earlier
injection timing. I generally start with it in, then pull it out for
faster, smoother idle. This is a nice feature to have when scraping
windows.

Hmm, I'll have to watch my auxiliary glow plug light more closely next
time I start my van. While the plugs stay on for several seconds after
the dash light goes out, I'm pretty sure they turn off immediately when I
release the key from the START position. Or maybe my glow relay isn't
doing what it's supposed to? Does anyone else have a light wired directly
to the glow plug bus bar, like I do, so they can check this for me?
