I ran my Boston Bob 1.9 for a year adjusted the way he sent it to me, which
is the 0.006" lash method he describes on his website. During this
initial year, I never had any lifter noise. I would get a little
valve-train noise all the time (similar to an OHC engine), but never any
clacking. I decided to go 1/2 turn to see if I could get it to completely
quiet it down. Yes, it is quieter now. However, I did have one brief
clacking incident after moving the van around in my driveway to re-park it.
It clacked briefly the next time I started it, but soon quieted down. On
my recent 900 mile trip, it behaved perfectly, and my mpg was up almost 1
mpg over last year's trip, which followed a similar route. I can't say
for sure it was valve related as I also switched to the Valvoline synthetic
blend for this trip. 21.3 mpg over the whole trip. I think 2 turns would
be too much, but the best setting may depend on your driving usage. If
your van sits for days or weeks at a time, I would go 0.006". If you drive
it every day, 2 turns may very well work for you. Starting and stopping
the engine without letting it fully warm up is asking for lifter noise.

Okay guys, fill me in. I have found (thanks to the list members that so
promptly sent the info from the archives) three different opinions on valve
clearance: .006, one turn, two turns. Why the big difference in opinions?
An which do you more experienced people use? (This for a stock 2.1l)
