Here is the list of tools I used to remove the automatic transmission out of
my '88 Wolfburg Vanagon:
2 jack stands (good ones)
3000 lbs floor jack
Set of metric sockets, 10 mm to 19 mm
set of combination wrenches (open end, box end), from 8 mm to 19 mm
6 mm allen wrench or hex driver (to remove the cv joint bolts)
I pair of adjustable pliers (channelocks) to remove about 5 or seven spring
hose clamps
8mm allen to remove the air conditioning compressor
3/8 drive ratchet with long handle
Regular pliers, long screwdrivers, slot and phillips.
I don't want to outline the procedure here, but keep in mind that in order
to remove the transmission, the engine has to be removed forst, or better
yet, remove both units (engine and transmission) together and separate them
on the floor. For an amateur mechanis, it is a big job. For an experienced
mechanis, still a big job. Best thing to do is to have a friend to help, and
either mark everything, or take pictures, or draw your own in a piece of
paper, because you are not going to put it back together the same day (no
even the same week), so don't trust your memory. If I forgot something,
maybe someone else can add to the list.
