My 1987 Syncro Westy now has almost 202K miles on it. The water pump was
recently replaced for the third time, just before I drove it from NY to
Florida and back. Otherwise, the engine has never been disassembled. The
exhaust was replaced once. This engine has traveled across the country
and to Alaska. Back when I drove air cooled busses most pre trip
maintenance consisted of a valve job and then praying while on the trip.
Now pre trip maintenance is checking the fluids, possibly changing the
oil (7,500 miles) and checking the belts and inflating the tires. I have
yet to see an air cooled Vanagon provide anywhere near this type of
service. I have also used it for towing, even other Vanagons (not
recommended).

Looks like a great opportunity for flames here, but lets avoid that.
Just send me your address and I'll ship you a free brick to go behind
your rear wheel, I might even thrown in a bucket so you can recycle that
antifreeze each morning.
